European Commission, Council of Europe and Data Protection authorities are celebrating today the 14th edition of Data Protection Day with the objective of informing and raising awareness of the rights and obligations as Internet users and may also provide an opportunity for data protection professionals to meet with stakeholders.

In general, society is not familiar with data protection issues and is unaware of the existing rights in this respect. So, in 2006 the Council of Europe established a Data Protection Day to be celebrated each year on 28th of January, the date on which the Council of Europe’s data protection convention, known as 'Convention 108', was celebrated.

Data Protection Day is now celebrated worldwide and is called Privacy Day outside Europe.
