On 8 May 2019, SAFER project partners gathered in Derry~Londonderry (Northern Ireland) for their third Steering Committee meeting of the project. Hosted by our partner Derry City and Strabane District Council (DCSDC), Leo Strawbridge welcomed partners from Republic of Ireland, Spain, France and Portugal to Derry, Northern Ireland’s second largest city.

In the morning, SAFER partners met at the Guildhall to review progress on activities during the semester and discuss the next steps of the project. In the afternoon, the partnership had the opportunity to visit a number of sites relevant to the implementation of the innovation activities in the project.

Site one was a visit to the Loughs Agency, an agency of the Foyle, Carlingford and Irish Lights Commission (FCILC), established as one of the cross-border bodies under the 1998 agreement between the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Government of Ireland. The agency aims to provide sustainable social, economic and environmental benefits through the effective conservation, management, promotion and development of the fisheries and marine resources of the Foyle and Carlingford areas. Within SAFER, DCSDC is working with the Loughs Agency in the implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) technology to support them in their task of ensuring the sustainability of the native Lough Foyle flat oyster. At site two, partners had the opportunity to visit the Foylemore Irish Luxury Oysters farm to see first-hand the work carried out.

SAFER project would like to take this opportunity to thank our hosting partner Derry City and Strabane District Council for their hospitality, and to all partners who travelled to Derry~Londonderry.
