The European Capital of Innovation
(iCapital) Award is an annual cash prize given to the most innovative city in Europe. It is part of the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme and the objective is to look for the city that best demonstrates its ability to take advantage of innovation to improve the life of its citizens.

In 2014 the prize was awarded to Barcelona, in 2016 to Amsterdam and in 2017 the winner was Paris. Last year Aarhus (Denmark) took home the iCapital Award with the intention of highlighting and collection the innovative initiatives of the city with the aim of being an international partner by strengthening awareness of innovation inside the city.

This prize is valued in €1 million to the winner, €100,000 to each of the five runner-up cities and a recognition to several finalist cities that have contributed to the promotion of innovation. The cities that apply for the prize will be judged by an independent panel of external evaluator about the innovative solutions to the social challenges.

The cities applying for it have to contribute to open and dynamic ecosystems, involve citizens in the process and use innovation to improve the sustainability of their cities.

In this 2019 edition, all the cities interested can apply from 20 February to 6 June.
