Europe Day is a date that has been celebrated every 9th of May since 1985 in memory of the Schuman Declaration. On May 9, 1950, Robert Schuman delivered a speech in Paris presenting a proposal for the creation of an organized Europe based on the union of European countries as a fundamental basis for the maintenance of peaceful relations. In that agreement, the European Carbon and Steel Community was consolidated, and more countries joined with the aim of creating a free space for the circulation of people and goods.

In 1985, 35 years after the Schuman Declaration, the European Council decided to declare May 9 as Europe Day to celebrate the peace and unity. Nowadays, this date is used by local EU offices institutions to organise plenty of activities and events in different places.

It’s important to be aware of what this day means. For this reason, the number of schools taking part in the celebration of this day is significantly increasing. Children and young people in general are the future citizens of the European Union, therefore, many teachers participate with different initiatives that promote Europeanism.

This year the EU institutions are going to open their doors to the public in Brussels (4 May), Luxembourg (11 May) and Strasbourg (19 May).
