TIDE, a new project to deploy Virtual Reality to create new Digital Age historical attractions in Europe’s Atlantic Regions, through Interreg Atlantic Area.
19 October 2018 - DIGITAL REGIONS  project
TIDE, or Atlantic Network for Developing Historical Maritime Tourism, is one of 27 new cooperation projects approved for funding by the Interreg Atlantic Area programme in Cardiff (UK) on the 18 October 2018.

The ERNACT network of regions will lead the TIDE project. It will commence in January 2019 with a budget of more than €2.4 million. Eight partners from regions in the UK, Ireland, France, Spain and Portugal will work together to develop new types of historical maritime tourist packages based using digital transformation technologies to link cultural attractions on Europe’s Atlantic.

This project will enable Atlantic areas to share and combine digital research and innovation capacity to create the next generation of visitor attractions based on our shared cultural and historical heritage”, says Colm Mc Colgan General Manager at ERNACT.

This can include museums, shipwreck sites and archives related to battles or migrating passengers and their stories. It will also include linking visitor centres to real underwater sites that contain shipwrecks or submarines, and creating a richer visitor experience by introducing new technologies such as Virtual Reality.

Facing a common challenge
For the TIDE partners, a common challenge is to create  sustainable and authentic tourism offerings, based on their shared maritime culture. The project will help address regional challenges in the fields of innovation and competitiveness, resource efficiency, territorial risks and biodiversity. In other words, the partnership will network to improve the Atlantic Area’s attractiveness and cultural and historical identity by developing its unique stock of historical marine assets related to trade, migration and wars.

TIDE partners are:
  • ERNACT network of regions, Ireland (lead partner)
  • CLARTE technological resources center, France
  • Government of Cantabria, Spain
  • Donegal County Council, Ireland
  • Madeira Tourism Board, Portugal
  • Derry City and Strabane District Council, Northern Ireland, UK
  • University of Cadiz, Spain
  • Devon County Council, UK
The Institute for Employment and Socioeconomic and Technology of the Provincial of Cadiz (Spain) will be an associated partner too.
