Smart Digital Cities initiatives - ERNACT network of Regions links Canada and Europe through Newfoundland & Labrador
21 May 2018 - DIGITAL REGIONS  project
Steve Kent, CAO City of Mount Pearl, NL; Councillor Gus Hastings;
On 18 May 2018, the City of Mount Pearl (Newfoundland & Labrador) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with the ERNACT network.

ERNACT implements innovative digital-age projects to improve member regions’ digital needs, capturing opportunities by designing cooperative projects and initiatives – with support from the European Union – that recognise the global and interconnected nature of today’s digital world.

The signing of the MoC - approved by the ERNACT Interregional Management Committee (IMC) in Brussels on 18 April - took place at Harbour House, Derry/Londonderry. It is expected to enable the two parties to collaborate more closely on activities and issues of common interest, namely, the Government of Canada’s “Smart CitiesChallenge” and the "EU Digital Cities Challenge”.

Steve Kent, Chief Administrative Officer at City of Mount Pearl said: “We are bidding to win up to $50 million in the Smart Cities Challenge, competing against big cities in Canada such as Montreal and Toronto. We want to create a technology ‘sandbox’, for collaboration, for scale-ups, for start-ups, bringing the right players together to solve community problems and a model that can be replicated across Canada. We hope that the experience and expertise of ERNACT will help us embark on our digital transformation process, creating opportunities and driving collaboration”.

It is anticipated that cooperation will focus on a number of areas including Maritime, Culture and Tourism.
