Using Internet of Things to support climate action in Donegal

This INNOCAP pilot from Donegal County Council will use Internet of Things to monitor water levels in Glenties catchment area
19 November 2024
-
INNOCAP
project
In October,
INNOCAP project
partners met in Donegal, Ireland, for their fifth partnership meeting, hosted by the lead partner, ERNACT. This meeting was a great chance to check on the progress of each partner’s pilot services.
Daragh McDonough
,
IS Project Leader (GIS) & Broadband Officer Information Systems
at
Donegal County Council
, explained how IoT is being used to monitor rivers, maintain roads, and track visitor numbers at tourist sites.
As part of their work carried out in INNOCAP, Donegal County Council is implementing a pilot using sensors to monitor water levels in the river catchment flowing into Glenties Town, County Donegal. These sensors will provide real-time data on water levels, helping the team understand how the river reacts to weather events. This information is going to be used to test nature-based solutions and assess if they improve the river’s response.
The pilot will benefit the people of Glenties, with plans to integrate river-level data into an alert system that warns residents of rising water levels.
Watch the video below to learn more about this innovative pilot service and stay tuned for more updates on INNOCAP partners’ work!
