New Industry 4.0 Centre opens in Derry

North West Regional College’s Business Support Centre launches an i4.0 centre to boost innovation in manufacturing.

North West Regional College’s (NWRC) Business Support Centre (BSC) has officially launched a new i4.0 (industry 4.0) Centre at the colleges Springtown Campus in Derry, Northern Ireland.

Commenting on the official opening, Dr Fergal Tuffy, Business Support Centre Manager said that, “the NWRC, with funding from the Department for the Economy, has invested in innovation and skills centres over the last number of years as part of the College’s plan to support industry to embrace new technologies and skills. Through our existing facilities of Foodovation, Product Design Centre, DIAL (health and care), and XR Hub (augmented and virtual reality) we have helped businesses and entrepreneurs to develop and enhance products, processes and services, underpinned with the necessary skills to do so. The industry 4.0 Centre at Springtown is the latest investment, where we will be supporting businesses and providing training in an exciting technology area, to meet the future business needs.”

In addition, Cathal Ferry, i4.0 Centre Manager highlighted that in partnership with Smart Nano NI, a consortium that supports advanced prototyping and smart manufacturing methods, and Connected NI, a programme to develop interaction and stimulate innovation to benefit Northern Ireland companies and economy, the new premises will include "some of the latest state-of-the-art equipment such as the Festo i4.0 factory automation training system and robotic equipment.” Among others, the i4.0 centre will also facilitate high-tech Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) equipment as well as 3D printers to boost innovation in manufacturing, robotics, cloud technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI), among other tech fieds.
