ERNACT led and Northern Periphery and Arctic Programme funded SMARCTIC project is increasing the use of energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions in housing and public infrastructures in remote, sparsely populated areas.

Our project commenced in July 2019 and since then, partners are continuously implementing new measures in order to continue improving air quality and indoor environment in their regions. This week we speak with our SMARCTIC project partner Ragnar K. Ásmundsson from Orkustofnun, the National Energy Authority of Iceland, about one of the last solutions implemented: a Fresh-r unit, which is fully automatic, just plugs in and starts controlling the air flow.

"The SMARCTIC project focus in Iceland has been on providing improved air quality in the indoor school environment in rural areas (e.g. small towns and villages), using high-level IoT sensors and automated technology, tested in urban areas (‘smart cities’). The Icelandic partner, Orkusetur, has now provided and arranged for the installation of a so-called Fresh-r air exchange unit, which operates in a small local school in the village of Borgarfjordur eystri (ca. 100 inhabitants)", explains Ragnar.
