A virtual tour to celebrate an underwater archaeology incredible discovery

It marks the 50th Anniversary of the discovery of the Spanish Armada Wreck La Trinidad Valencera off the coast of Donegal.
24 February 2021 - TIDE  project

Ronan McConnell | Derry

The Discovery of la Trinidad Valencera is one the most important archaeological finds off the coast of Ireland since underwater archaeology as a science began. The techniques used by the divers, and the incredible artefacts they uncovered, tell an incredible story of the legacy of an event that changed the course of Naval History in Europe. In the TIDE project, we are all connected by the legacy of the Spanish Armada and its impact on our heritage.
For the 50th Anniversary we wanted to mark the occasion not just with news stories, but by bringing new technology into the mix with a guided online tour. We also wanted to supplement this experience with newly digitised resources and documents, combing all into one portal which is essentially the essence and spirit of the TIDE project. To this end we combine video with Virtual Reality (VR), documents with images to create a holistic resource and experience. Over the course of the project this level of engagement will become much more immersive and engaging, but its always good to start with the primary sources to keep that historical legacy intact.
The divers that discovered the wreck 50 years ago were mostly amateur enthusiasts who very quickly become experts in uncovering, conserving, preserving and promoting maritime heritage around the world. We are very much looking forward to continuing this journey in the virtual frontier with our Atlantic Area partners.
