Aim of Event

Increase digital transformation innovation and research linkages between Newfoundland and Labrador and European regions and cities.
  1. Provide an opportunity for the European-based ERNACT regions and cities to study the digital transformation development ecosystem of Newfoundland & Labrador
  2. Increase collaboration between universities from the ERNACT regions and cities and their participation in the network's projects.
  3. Explore participation by Newfoundland and Labrador organisations in digital transformation projects being developed by the ERNACT network for the EU and Canadian innovation programmes.

This, the first ERNACT network management meeting outside Europe, will take place in Newfoundland and Labrador (Canada) on the 18th & 19th October and is kindly hosted and organised by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Newfoundland and Labrador (Canada), located in the Atlantic, is
uniquely positioned to act as a digital transformation innovation cooperation bridge between Europe, North America and the Arctic. Its credentials are attested to by its world-class ocean and Arctic tech cluster and natural energy resources (including gas and hydro), as well as strengths in AI and Medtech.

Support for cooperation is underpinned by the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) and arrangements by Canada and the EU for mutual participation in a number of digital transformation innovation and research programmes including Horizon Europe, National Research Council of Canada, Northern Periphery & Arctic (NPA) and Atlantic Area (AA).

In more recent times, Europe and Canada have been drawn closer together by their shared need to cooperate on energy and food security as a result of the invasion of Ukraine.

The Government of Newfoundland & Labrador have been active members of the ERNACT network for a number of years and are currently participating in a number digital innovation projects in ocean tech, public services and tourism.

The agenda of the meeting will be structured to enable:

  • Study visits to world-leading ocean tech institutions including the NFL Marine Institute and Oceans Hollyrood Initiative.
  • Presentations on other key NFL digital tech areas in energy, food, AI and MedTech.
  • Workshop and meetings for the universities from the ERNACT regions to explore research collaboration and participation in new ERNACT projects
  • Presentation updates for ERNACT members and visiting university representatives on the status of EU and Canadian funding programmes for digital innovation and research
  • Presentations for NFL city authorities and organisations to interact with representatives of ERNACT cities and regions and to express interest in participating in ERNACT projects.
Last but not least, the core members of the network will progress with key business planning including 2023 budget, new proposal development & new digital transformation priorities.

The aim, specific objectives and draft agenda for the 2-day meeting are set out below.
