At a time of economic crisis, increased energy prices and climate change, the tourism sector in southern Bulgaria has begun to show an interest in, and taken the initiative towards adopting, more environmentally-friendly practices. The sector has thereby gained new, improved opportunities to be competitive. Another reason that this project focuses on the tourism sector is because in recent years many extensive hotel projects have been undertaken that have not considered environmental aspects. 

The aim of the project is, by means of educational measures and in-plant assessment, to persuade companies to introduce strategies and plans of action for more environmentally- friendly routines, products and services. By using resources efficiently and in a well thought-out manner, the environmental burden and costs can be reduced, at the same time as working conditions, the environment and profitability are improved. Concrete measures concern preventing and reducing the use of certain substances, as well as taking care of waste in the best way possible.

The most important stages in the project:
  1. Creating a coordinating unit for sustainable business development.
  2. Educating 40 (20 + 20) experts in Cleaner Production (CP) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)   for the further education of interested companies and their employees.
  3. In-plant assessment (IPA) of 25 hotels and monitoring on the implementation of the options identified  in the IPA reports
  4. Making use of and distributing the experiences of those companies that have participated in the education and begun implementing new sustainable routines.

  • An increased awareness of the value of, and need for, the development of sustainable tourism.
  • Reduced environmental burden due to lower consumption of electricity, water and chemicals.
  • Reduced costs for the participating companies due to new routines.
  • Increased knowledge at the national level of how and why to run a successful environmental undertaking.
  • Increased engagement among the employees at the companies involved.
  • Increased interest in environmental issues even in other sectors.
  • Increased agreement between the real situation and the goals and laws of the EU and national laws.

Success factors:
  • Clear division of responsibility between the different interest groups.
  • The newly-created coordinating unit for sustainable business development.
  • A strong engagement by both the management and employees of the hotels and companies concerned.
  • The ability to see the connection between taking responsibility for the environment and strengthening competitiveness.
  • The insight that the process is long term and requires gradual introduction.
