Activities for the European Maritime Day in Cantabria (Spain)

Go back

19 May 2017  - DIGITAL REGIONS  project

The 20th of May we celebrate the European Maritime Day, jointly established by the European Council, the European Parliament and the European Commission in 2008, as an integral part of the EU's maritime policy. This day aims to give visibility to the sea and the oceans, as well as to disseminate its importance from the economic, environmental point of view and as natural and cultural heritage of European citizens.

Cantabria is a region in the north of Spain that has always been linked to the sea, with a great tradition of fishing and seafaring that has greatly characterized its way of life. At the present, the fishing activity of the region is of great importance for its economy, with a fleet that has achieved a position of great relevance in the ports of the North-West of the Cantabrian Sea.

Therefore, between the 20th and 27th of May, the Government of Cantabria, a Core ERNACT Region, is going to organise a series of events around the fishing sector to celebrate the 'European Week of Fisheries', a sector of special importance for the region.

Apart from the Government of Cantabria, the ERNACT network of regions has another four Core Partners that have a strong relationship with the maritime culture: the Government of Newfoundland & Labrador (Canada), Fomento San Sebastián (Spain), Donegal County Council (Ireland) and Derry City & Strabane District Council (Northern Ireland).

A new European aquaculture innovation project
‘SAFER - Smart Atlantic Seafood Clusters’ innovation project, in which the Government of Cantabria participates, has been recently approved and co-funded by the EU INTERREG Atlantic Area Programme. The project aims to improve the innovation performance of the seafood sector by accelerating technology adoption through transnational cooperation. It responds to the challenge of applying smart growth technologies and processes in an Atlantic sector with high-growth potential.
