Aim of Event

SMART Energy System Design: Explore how smart city models and digital technologies can improve the energy performance of smaller cities and communities
  1. Build awareness of how smart city models can be used for improving the energy performance of cities
  2. Explore particular digital technologies used in these models
  3. Discuss how smart city models can be adapted to suit the needs of smaller communities in the EU’s Northern Periphery and Arctic Areas

Description

Affordable, reliable and efficient supply and usage of energy is a major challenge for Northern Periphery and Arctic area communities. This project aims to develop smart communities by implementing smart technology designed to increase energy efficiency and use of renewable energy solutions in housing and public infrastructure in remote, sparsely populated areas in the Northern Periphery and Arctic area.

The partnership will develop and implement a “Smart Energy Management Model” (SEMM) adapted from existing smart city models.  This model is primarily envisaged as an integrated energy communications channel between the public authority and energy consumers.  Public authorities will use the SEMM to raise awareness among energy consumers and energy consumers will have the potential to view their own and the community’s overall energy usage. The model will facilitate the development of innovative energy pilots that utilise ICT technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things to trial new solutions, raise awareness and change energy behaviour.  The overall output of this project is to test the effectiveness of the SEMM so that it may be applied to improve energy efficiency across multiple regions and communities in the Northern Periphery and Arctic area.
